Description:
Patchwork quilt in a variation of the Log Cabin pattern, made of cotton fabrics in red and cream, set in alternate blocks. Backing is of quilted linen squares. Quilt is edged with cream cotton fringing, added at a later date.

History:
Maker unknown. The quilt ws made between 1885 - 1889 as a wedding present for Miss Olley's mother, by a lady who travelled back and forth to England, and worked the patchwork on the ship. Donated to the National Gallery of Victoria in 1979 by Miss Jean Olley.

Quilt top. The centre piece is appliqued with cross strips and triangles with 'Chester 4 �.' printed on a centre blue strip. The last letters are difficult to read. The borders are triangles, rectangles and squares in cottons (including dimity) and some chenilles.

Tumbling Block quilt made from pure silk ribbons, patterned and plain. The quilt edge follows the block shapes. The backing is polished cotton printed with flowers.
