Description:
A pictorial quilt entitled 'A Farmer's Home'. Wool, squares and oblongs pieced randomly. On these are appliqued pieces depicting aspects of family and farm life including the farm house, washing on the line, sheep, cattle, kangaroos. It is all hand sewn apart from the backing which is machined directly on to the top. The backing is red paisley cotton.

History:
This pictorial quilt was made by Mrs. Matilda Hutchinson (born Loader) probably in the early 1920s. It was handed on in the family to Vera Matilda Beasley youngest child of Matilda and then to Noleen Carthew (born Beasley).
Story:
Matilda Hutchinson (born Loader) was the grandmother of the present owner.
Matilda and her mother Emma sailed in 1895 on the 'Boniyong' to Freemantle W.A. and thence to the goldfields.
Later Matilda and her husband were gardeners and for some time were with the well known SA Playford family who for many years had cherry orchards in the Adelaide Hills.

"The Rajah "quilt" is a patchwork and appliquéd bed cover or coverlet. It is in pieced medallion or framed style: a popular design style for quilts in the British Isles in the mid 1800's. There is a central field of white cotton decorated with appliquéd (in broderie perse) chintz birds and floral motifs. This central field is framed by 12 bands or strips of patchwork printed cotton. The quilt is finished at the outer edge by white cotton decorated with appliquéd daisies on three sides and inscription in cross stitch surrounded by floral chintz attached with broderie perse on the fourth side. All fabrics used in the Rajah quilt are cotton with the exception of small amounts of linen and silk threads. The quilt shows evidence of being produced by many hands." Handsewn quilt of hexagon patches in cotton prints in 'Grandmother's Flower Garden' pattern. Each flower consists of double rows of print hexagons around a yellow centre and these are joined by 'paths' in plain green and white cotton. Backing is green cotton and there is a wool padding. There is outline quilting around all green and white hexagons and centre and first row of hexagons in flowers.

Patchwork quilt made from diamond patches in a variety of cotton materials set in a 'tumbling block' pattern. Patterns include geometrics, stripes, a 'Kate Greenway' print and colours are largely soft pastels, dark browns, with some reds and blues. The quilt has been cut down and a later border added. There is no padding and the backing is cream cotton.

Hexagonal piece of patchwork made up of 9 rows of rosettes of hexagons in a wide variety of colours and patterns mainly in silks and velvets. It is incomplete. Backing papers are still in the outside rows and also basting threads. Hexagons are joined by fine whip stitching. It is unlined.

Crazy patchwork quilt with mainly patterned pieces in a wide variety of designs and colours. Backing is wholecloth patterned cotton. The quilt is edged with a checked bias binding. Machine construction.

The suffolk puffs are mainly cotton in a wide variety of colours and plain and patterned materials. The puffs are small squares rather than the more usual circles. The backing is teal satin hand stitched to the top. There is a teal bow at one end. There is no padding.
