Description: 
Pieced squares, each square with a cross and 4 small squares in red. Crosses are in rows alternating 2 shades of blue and 2 of brown. Cream background. Now unlined but remnant blanket like material in corners. Originally had a cotton frill. Quilt was made from scraps of material used for making children's clothes.
History: 

The quilt was made by Elizabeth Mary Smith (born Potts) in the early 1900s. It passed to the maker's grand-daughter, Nadia Brookes and has been registered by her daughter(the maker's great grand-daughter) Sharlene Rogers. The quilt is not used.

Story: 

Elizabeth Mary Smith, 1856 - 1946, was married at 17 and emigrated to Australia with her husband Tom some time later. She had 11 children and one was born either on the ship or shortly after their arrival in Australia. 2 babies died at birth.
Tom and Elizabeth Smith took up land in 1897 near Miriam Vale (Qld) and called it "Smithfield". They originally lived in a 2 roomed slab hut which later became the chook house. Their house was the first 2 storey one in the district and was made from pit sawn timber. Sharlene's grandfather, Donald Smith, remembered the house being built and that it was up by 1912.
Nadia Brookes (maker's grand-daughter) lived at "Smithfield" and remembers the quilt on the bed but not her grandmother making it. She was 12 when her grandmother died.

Crazy patchqork quilt, handsewn, composed of six large squares of patches in brocade, velvet and silk in random shapes and sizes. Patches are stitched to others by blanket stitch in yellow thread. Some patches have surface embroidery, e.g. a dragonfly, flowers, music notes, and names, 'Minnie', 'Loyetta' (house in Ballarat), 'Diana'. There are also five small cream bobbles. Silk and velvet frame quilt with centre patchwork block of squares and triangles with a top and bottom border of silk in Royal Stewart tartan. This rectangular centre frame is surrounded by plain and 'saw tooth' (triangles) borders. The outer border is dark grey silk embroidered in pastels in stem stitch in a meandering vine and leaf pattern. There is no padding or quilting. Backing originally of mustard wool material machine stitched along turned in edges. Dark red cotton is attached to original backing.

Patchwork top made of cottons, constructed with 5 by 5 rows of squared 8 point pieced stars alternating with white cross-shaped blocks (made from 4 pieces). On all sides are borders of half stars. The outer border is of rectangles of cotton prints appliquéd on to cotton to form a plaited pattern. The border only is backed with a band of cream cotton. All patches are whip stitched together.

Patchwork quilt in Log Cabin pattern made from silks, velvet, cottons and taffetas, in prints and plain, around a centre squares of black velvet. Colours are, in the dark sections, blues, greens, browns, yellow and pinks. The base of the blocks is blue and white ticking. The padding is probably cotton. Backing is of green cotton. There is an attached frill on all sides of green cotton, faded to dull light brown.

Patchwork quilt made up of 100mm multi coloured squares in a variety of materials including cottons, synthetics, lurex, plain and printed. Each square has dacron padding and is then joined in strips and the strips joined. All hand sewn. The backing is blue synthetic whole cloth 60mm of which is returned to the front to form a border.
