Wholecloth quilt covered with floral cretonne both sides, deep pink and yellow flowers on cream background. Padding is hessian/jute type bags joined.

History:
The quilt was probably made by Isabella Donaldson in Temora NSW or Girgarry Vic after 1908. It then passed to Olive Donaldson and is now owned by Isabella's grand daughter, Margaret Eisenhauer. It is not used.
Story:
Isabella Donaldson lived at Girgarry (Goulburn Valley Vic) and was Margaret Eisenhauer's paternal grandmother. Margaret feels the sewing on the quilt, in part quite rough, indicates the 2 quilts were not made by Olive (Isabella's daughter-in-law, Margaret's mother) who was a beautiful seamstress.
Margaret, born 1925, recalls this quilt was always on her parents' bed.

Wholecloth pram quilt with a top of pink cotton sateen, and the reverse is a more finely woven, ivory, fabric. All over quilting design as main feature, with stylised hearts, leaves and cross hatching. The padding is cotton batting. 870 x 660 mm.

There are many motifs such as flowers, butterflies, birds also dates, initials and names of local properties. It is padded with a thin soft material and the replacement backing (old) is satin. Patchwork quilt of multi coloured silks and brocades. Crazy patchwork borders, mainly rectangular fabrics pieced together in diagonal patterns, radiating from a central frame embroidered with flowers. Many pieces are extensively embroidered in a great variety of stitches and motifs; butterflies, sunflowers, cats, daffodils, crown, pawn broker's symbol, 'money to lend', 'good night', the initials of family members and 'mater 1890'. The quilt has a deep border of maroon sateen. There is no padding visible but it is possibly a blanket. The backing is green/gold silk with a self stripe with red cotton damask showing underneath, possibly an earlier backing.

Rectangular quilt with front and back made of rectangles of cotton samples of shirt materials, in checks, stripes and plains. Colours are soft muted reds, greens, blues, yellows and browns, and pastels. Construction is 3 to 4 rows of rectangles joined across the quilt. Padding is probably an old blanket. There is a row of hand quilting approximately the width of one patch in from the edge, holding the layers together.
