Description: 
Frame quilt pieced from square, rectangular and triangular pieces from plain and patterned cotton. The central motif of the rooster is appliqued in red cotton on white background with a border of red triangles. There is a white cotton backing.

History: 

The quilt was made by Amelia Brown (1817-1905) at Bowning NSW probably between 1856 and 1880. The quilt has only been in the Brown family linen cupboard, first at Bowning where Amelia lived with her youngest son John Brown until he died and then Binalong where she lived with William Brown, father of the present owner Una Braby, at 'Emu Flat'. Una has owned the quilt for the last 20 years. It is not used now.

Story: 

Amelia Brown was born in Devon, England, the daughter of James and Mary Parsons. She married John Brown in 1836 and they came to Sydney in 1857, at the height of the goldrushes, with their 7 children. They settled on a property called 'Oakvale' at Binalong near Yass NSW. "The original old home was burnt during a bush fire about 1938. 1 1/2 miles further down Banjo Paterson's father lived, he is buried in Binalong cemetery."

The quilt consists of a central field within a main field within a narrow border a main border and then an outer border. The centre field consists of embroidered Prince of Wales feathers with 4 embroidered motifs, parrot, duck, open fan and 4 playing cards within an appliqued sunburst border. The quilt has many embroidered and appliqued motifs, some just abstract shapes, many with a Chinese Japanese theme. It is quilted and padded but the type of padding is unknown. The backing is red cotton sateen.

This double sided quilt has a centre frame with an appliqued circle feather stitched on. This is surrounded by blocks and strips of mainly rectangles. It is hand pieced. The other side is very broad strips of rectangles mainly in florals some the same as other florals in quilts in the collection. The padding is a cotton blanket and some pieced shapes
The circle motif is common to other quilts in the 'Craigmoor' collection.

Scrap quilt made from a myriad of different materials, cottons, silk types velvets etc. Alternate rows have triangles and odd shaped pieces with in between rows of squares and rectangles in smaller pieces. It is completely machine pieced. There is no padding. The backing is blue slub rayon and is brought to the front to form a border.

Cotton log cabin double bed quilt. Each square has 52 pieces (i.e. 13 pieces x 4 to make a square). There are 192 squares so a total of 10.092 pieces. There is probably no padding. The backing is calico with a floral pattern done in running stitch.

Colours are mainly reds, greens, blues, pink and orange, mostly solid colours with some checks, stripes and florals. Padding is an open weave hessian material. Backing is a loosely woven cotton, pieced, buff coloured with a woven red and orange thread. Machine pieced, machine quilted in a large rectangle.
