Quilt was made by Lenore Myrtle Howes (born Silvies, 1913 - 99) in North Platte, Nebraska, USA; probably in the 1930's. It was then owned by her daughter, Sandra Lee Mires James, and now by her granddaughter, the present owner. It is not used.

Story:

"I remember this quilt as always being in my childhood home. As children in the late 60's, early 70's my sister and I love playing 'Barbies' on it. My grandmother once remarked of the 'thousands' of pieces on it." [Shari Jamieson]

Reversible cot quilt, hand pieced, in the log cabin pattern; the blocks measure 150mm square. The patches have been cut from plain and patterned dress, pyjama and men's shirt fabrics. Strong diagonals were created in the overall design through using light and dark colours, often a strong red, to divide the log cabin blocks in half diagonally. The back is made from rectangles of striped men's shirt fabrics in pastel blues, pinks and browns with a large 'flowe' in each corner, each pieced from six hexagon patches around a central seventh hexagon. There is no padding.

"The quilt is made up of many cotton hexagons of various colours, patterns and designs, finely sewn by hand, making a very attractive bedspread. Each patch is lined with lawn. It is quite a heavy quilt, with its plain border, and backing of home-spun cotton or cesarine. The family always called it a 'cottage design'."
No quilting.
