Description:
Quilt pieced from scraps machine sewn on to calico pieces including printed bags. The backing is wholecloth, cretonne.

History:
This unfinished quilt was made by Mrs. Buckley, the great gandmother of the present owner, in South Australia early this century. It was then owned by her daughter Gwendalyn Zelma Blanche Hynes (grandmother of Amanda Smith) until 1989 when Amanda claimed it just 10 days before Gwendalyn's death. It is not used now.
Story:
"My memories of this quilt were when I was sick at my grandmother's house (she lived around the corner from my house) it would be on my bed, an old fashioned old bed with curved top and base with a feather mattress."

Quilt centre has four pieced squares set within a star shaped border of square patches, set within a square frame (74cm square) edged with half triangles, then set within a red frame (114cm x 114 cm), diamond shaped or 'on point'. In the 4 triangles are double diamond shapes, then a wide border of squares and 'square within a square' patches with red triangles. Red binding. Padding is probably wool. Double sided patchwork quilt/rug constructed from squares machined together in strips and then the strips joined. It is made in one piece and then doubled over. The materials are mainly wool, worsted, part cream machine made jumper, pink and blue mohair, blue and white spotted flannelette and cream blanket and all are scraps or from worn clothing.

Machine sewn quilt made from 125mm squares of scraps left over from dressmaking, joined in strips and then the strips joined. There is a border of fawn cotton and the backing is the same material. The padding is an old blanket and the border is padded with sheep's wool.

Rectangular quilt of print and plain cottons pieced in squares and rectangles, the centre group of pieces surround a larger piece of pale blue fabric, within a frame or border, of bright pink material, then 3 rows of squares and rectangles. Backing of plain fabric. Machine stitched on a treadle machine.
" This well worn quilt is of pieced diamonds set into squares (221 make up the quilt). Thick woollen fabric has been used for the pieces. These are with plain dyed fabrics or tartans and checks. All work on the quilt is hand sewn. The quilt was lined with a fine blue cotton." [NGA] The quilt is not padded. 1835 x 1400mm
