The Military Vehicle Collectors Society of South Australia Inc was formed in 1976, and opened their Museum in 1993. The Society is dedicated to the preservation of Australian military vehicles, not as a para-military group, but as one preserving a part of the military aspect of Australia's heritage. The museum is located in the repaired ruins of large ornate brick engine houses, built in 1905 for the Beaconsfield "Tasmania" gold mine. This 950sqm space is augmented by a 540sqm new building, outside space and a near-by park depicting the flowery gully school and a miner's cottage. The display in the foyer of the headquarters of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) contains artefacts from the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. The focus is on Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) from 1947 onwards and current Antarctic research. The AAD manages Australian government activity in Antarctica, provides transport and logistic support, maintains the four permanent Australian research stations, and conducts and manages scientific research programs both on land and in the Southern Ocean.
The Museum contains may culinary domestic items as well as some antique machinery and office equipment. The museum is a cluster of seven buildings which are themselves exhibits e.g.. One is 'Dryazell' (on its original site), one time private school and residence of first government subsidised teacher on Flinders Island. Another building is the replica of a Muttonbird processing shed as used 1920-1948. This shed contains original artefacts donated by Frank and Heather Willis whose family have been Muttonbirding for well over 100 years. The Mercury Print Museum is an interpretation centre with a particular focus on education. The Hazelman family were early pioneers in the Kyabram district. Their four-roomed mud brick and slab timber cottage is situated within the Fauna Park and now contains an interesting collection of memorabilia, photographs and period furniture. The Local History Resource Centre was established in 1984 as part of the Victoria 150th Celebrations. The collection is housed in the former Ouyen Courthouse building which it shares with the Mallee Genealogical Society. Our Museum consists of a house and various out buildings located on two town blocks in Port Welshpool. The collection is spread over the whole area. Our strong point is the early fishing industry in Corner Inlet, including a daily diary kept by the Smith family from 1887-1958. Louis Michel was the first person to discover gold in Australia. He did so in Anderson Creek, Warrandyte. Many famous artists have lived and worked here, many noted potters and craftsmen have lived and died here. The area has survived severe droughts, floods and raging fires.
