The front building of the Museum was originally used as a house dating from 1842. It is the only remaining house building in the CBD area of Port Macquarie from that era.
All artefacts on display show development from convict beginnings to early settlement from the 1840s. Displays at the museum include; a 'street of shops' depicting life as it was in the 1800s and a prize-winning costume collection. The museum has been in operation for over 40 years and is the winner of awards for best museum.

Collection: 
More than 20,000 items collected over a period of 40 years. Artefacts from all aspects of Port Macquarie's history and some very rare pieces from Australia's past. Artefacts include; objects from the penal colony in the 1800s (eg. flogging stool, leg irons, cat o' nine tails), china, silver, carpentry, dentistry, dolls and military memorabilia. The collection also includes; ladies costumes and underwear of 1780s - 1880s and later.

Sugar Mill
Description:
Sugar mill machinery, horse drawn, the cane being fed in by hand. The mill was established on the southern bank of the Hastings River in the late 1860s.

Captain Allman pioneered the growing of sugarcane in Australia, using the expertise of the negro convict James Williams. The first cane was grown in 1822 on the site now known as the Police Paddock in Murray Street Port Macquarie.

Winchester, .32 calibre, 1879 model. Reputedly the rifle used by the infamous Governor Boys, bushrangers. During their exploits the brothers killed 11 men and for 3 months in 1900 hundreds of
men were engaged in a man hunt. Joe and Jimmy Governor finally separated - Joe, who had this rifle was shot at Singleton. Jimmy was captured at Bobin Creek, 17 miles from Wingham; standing
trial at Darlinghurst on 22/12/1900 he was hanged 3 months later

Hot water fountain, copper, divided inside, 2 taps, said to belong to Major General Roger Wilson, died England 1857. Major Wilson acquired it during service in India and sent out to family.
